Description
This course is one module of the ENHANCE Digital Literacy certificate. It is an online-only self-learning course, provided on the RWTHmoodle platform. It consists of videos and quizzes which can be worked through in a flexible and autonomous manner within one semester. The course contains videos on the subjects data & data literacy, data standards & data types, data sources, data collection, data management, data analysis & data visualisation and data-driven reasoning, desicion-making and communication.
Expected learning outcomes
- Students explain the importance of data using examples from a scientific, societal, professional context.
- Students explain relevant definitions and concepts in the areas of data collection, data management, data analysis and visualization, data-based reasoning and communication, and in the area of data ethics and identify them in selected examples.
- Students explain activities of data management along the model of the data lifecycle and give simple examples.
- Based on the FAIR principles, students describe the sustainable use of data as well as the appropriate use of metadata.
- Students use selected tools and strategies in the area of data management.
- Students use selected tools and basic strategies to research and evaluate data.
- Students rationalize the selection of different data collection and analysis methods within selected case studies and reflect on the impact of this selection on the permissible conclusions to be drawn from data.
- Students name different forms of data visualizations and explain their function in simple examples.
- Students describe strategies for target- and audience-oriented communication with and about data using simple examples.
- Students name scenarios of and influences on data-based decision-making.
- Students explain selected concepts of data ethics using examples.
- Students plan, manage and reflect on their learning process.
Quality assurance
The two-level mutual trust-based quality assurance scheme has been adopted:
- at the university level: RWTH Aachen has applied its internal quality assurance procedures and structures to the proposal of DATA LITERACY I it submitted to ENHANCE and to its implementation - the related learning activities,
- at the Alliance level: the body composed of Education Officers has made decisions regarding the inclusion of DATA LITERACY I proposed by RWTH Aachen to the Innovative Learning Campus part of the joint ENHANCE educational offer, based on the compliance with the formal requirements and ENHANCE goals.

Learning Assessment
Passing a supervised exam. Additional information will be provided at the beginning of the course.
